In our article on Drugs for Depression, we should have included tardive dyskinesia (TD) in our list of adverse effects of second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) drugs. TD, which is more commonly associated with first-generation antipsychotics, can also occur in patients taking an SGA, especially with prolonged use. A meta-analysis found that the annualized incidence of TD was 2.6% in SGA users (M Carbon et al. World Psychiatry 2018; 17:330). Older adults are at increased risk.
